Short answer: Order fish tacos when you want bold seasoning, crunch and a cool, creamy sauce. Order grilled flounder when you want to taste the fish itself, mild and flaky with nothing to hide behind. Fish tacos Atlantic Beach style versus grilled flounder comes down to one question. Do you want flavor layered on, or the fish front and center?
Maybe you’re sandy, hungry and typing “best fish tacos near me” from a beach towel. Maybe someone at your table swears grilled flounder is the only honest fish dinner. Either way, this guide settles the argument before you sit down.
First, the terms. A fish taco is seasoned fish, grilled, blackened or fried, folded into a tortilla with something cool and crunchy on top. A grilled flounder plate is a fillet of mild flatfish, cooked hot and fast and served with sides.
What makes a great fish taco?
A great fish taco balances three things: fresh, firm fish, a cooking method with some edge, and a cool, crunchy topping. Miss one and the whole taco goes flat.
The fish comes first. You want a fillet that holds together in a tortilla and carries seasoning without turning to mush. Chef Rick Bayless built his fish taco batter from what he learned in Ensenada, Mexico. He talked with cooks who make fish tacos for a living there. His advice on the fish is plain:
“practically anything will work, but I like larger-flake, lighter-flavor fish best for this preparation.”
Rick Bayless, chef and cookbook author (Source: Rick Bayless).
Grouper fits that description. NOAA Fisheries calls gag grouper firm, moist and flaky, with a flavor somewhere between bass and halibut (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026). In the South Atlantic, fresh gag is available from May through December, so it isn’t on every fish counter all year.
Then come the toppings. Shredded cabbage keeps its crunch against warm fish, where lettuce goes limp, and a creamy sauce cools down any spice. Our Terrific Tacos: Fish come with crisp cabbage and our Atlantic Beach aioli, in flour tortillas with one side. You’ll find them, along with Grouper Tacos, under tacos on our menu.
Is blackened, grilled or fried fish better for tacos?
Blackened is the best all-rounder, grilled is the lightest, and fried brings the most crunch. The right pick depends on what’s inside the tortilla.
- Blackened: a spice crust seared hard in a hot pan. Smoky, a little heat, and great against a cool aioli.
- Grilled: clean and simple. It lets a sweet fish like mahi mahi lead.
- Fried: golden and crunchy. It suits soft seafood like oysters and calamari best.
Most of the richness on the plate comes from the cooking, not the fish. A 100 gram raw serving of mahi mahi has 85 calories and just 0.7 grams of fat (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026). NOAA also describes mahi as lean and fairly firm, with large, moist flakes and a sweet, mild flavor. It suits the grill, which is exactly how our Key West Style Mahi Tacos come: stuffed with grilled mahi mahi.
Doneness is the same test for every method. The FDA says most seafood should reach an internal 145°F, and cooked fish separates easily with a fork (Source: FDA 2024). A fillet that flakes cleanly is done, whether it was blackened, grilled or fried.
What does grilled flounder taste like?
Grilled flounder tastes mild and delicate, with fine, flaky white meat and very little “fishy” edge. It’s the fish to order for someone who says they don’t like fish.
NOAA Fisheries profiles summer flounder, a species U.S. boats land mainly from Maine to North Carolina, so read its numbers as a general guide to flounder rather than a label for any one plate. NOAA describes summer flounder meat as delicate in flavor, with a flaky, fine texture and edible skin, and lists 91 calories, 18.84 grams of protein and 1.19 grams of fat per 100 grams raw. NOAA calls flounder a good low-fat source of B vitamins and niacin (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026).
That gentle profile is why grilling suits it. A thin fillet cooks fast, so high heat browns the outside before the inside dries out. A heavy batter would bury it. Flounder comes and goes with the seasons, and our guide to seasonal seafood at the Jacksonville beaches explains what shows up when.
Which is healthier, fish tacos or grilled flounder?
Grilled flounder is usually the lighter plate, but both count toward the seafood the federal guidelines recommend each week. The difference comes from the tortilla, sauce and frying, not the fish.
The FDA cites the Dietary Guidelines for Americans: at least 8 ounces of seafood per week on a 2,000 calorie diet. The FDA and EPA fish advice lists flounder, shrimp, squid and oysters as “Best Choices” for lower mercury. Grouper and mahi mahi land on the “Good Choices” list (Source: FDA 2024). That’s general nutrition information, not medical advice, so check with your doctor if you have a specific diet to follow.
Here’s how the menu stacks up, using the menu’s own descriptions and the FDA and EPA lists:
| Plate | What’s in it | How it’s cooked | FDA and EPA list | Order it if you want |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terrific Tacos: Fish | Fish, crisp cabbage, Atlantic Beach aioli | Not listed on the menu | Depends on the fish | The classic fish taco |
| Terrific Tacos: Shrimp | Shrimp, crisp cabbage, Atlantic Beach aioli | Not listed on the menu | Best Choice | A taco with a sweet, snappy bite |
| Grouper Tacos | Grouper | Grilled, blackened or fried | Good Choice | A firm, meaty bite |
| Key West Style Mahi Tacos | Mahi mahi | Grilled | Good Choice | A lighter taco with big, sweet flakes |
| Oyster Tacos | Fresh oysters, mango wasabi slaw | Deep-fried | Best Choice | Crunch with a little sweet heat |
| Calamari Tacos | Fresh calamari | Lightly breaded and fried | Best Choice (squid) | Something a little different |
| Fresh Catch Platter, when flounder is on the board | Flounder, one side | Grilled, blackened, fried or jalapeno crusted | Best Choice | To taste the fish itself |
Can’t decide? Split it. One order of tacos and one Fresh Catch Platter in the middle of the table, and everyone gets to vote.
Who should order fish tacos in Atlantic Beach, and who should order grilled flounder?
Order the tacos for flavor, crunch and a casual, hands-on dinner. Order the flounder for a light plate where the fish does the talking.
Order fish tacos if you:
- Like a little spice and a lot of texture.
- Want to try more than one kind of seafood in one sitting.
- Are sharing plates with friends or feeding picky kids.
Order grilled flounder if you:
- Get nervous about anything that tastes “fishy.”
- Want more fish and less batter on the plate.
- Like to judge a kitchen by how it treats a plain fillet.
Either way, freshness matters more than the dish. Americans ate 19.1 pounds of seafood per person in 2023. NOAA Fisheries estimates 80 percent of it was imported (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2023). A mild fish like flounder hides nothing, so freshness shows. Here’s what wild-caught, never frozen really means when you see it on a menu.
Where can you get fish tacos and grilled flounder in Atlantic Beach?
You can get both at Two Dudes Seafood, three blocks from the ocean on Sailfish Drive East. If you’re after fish tacos, Atlantic Beach doesn’t get much more casual than this. We’re family-owned, we’ve been in Atlantic Beach since 2006, and our fish is wild-caught, never frozen.
The full menu lists Terrific Tacos (fish, shrimp or chicken), Oyster Tacos, Grouper Tacos, Key West Style Mahi Tacos and Calamari Tacos. All come in flour tortillas with one side. When flounder is on the fresh catch board, get a Fresh Catch Platter and ask for it grilled. It’s the simplest way to eat a fish the FDA lists as a lower-mercury “Best Choice” (Source: FDA 2024). Pair it with Hush Puppies, Coleslaw or a Side Salad from our sides. Not sure what’s on the board tonight? Call to ask what came in.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fish for fish tacos?
The best fish for tacos is firm, mild and fresh, so it holds together in a tortilla and soaks up seasoning. Grouper is one of the best on this coast. NOAA Fisheries describes it as firm, moist and flaky, with a mild but distinct flavor (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026). Mahi mahi is sweeter, with large, moist flakes that stay juicy on the grill. Softer seafood like oysters and calamari makes a great taco too, though it usually gets fried for crunch. Freshness beats species every time, so ask what came in and choose blackened, grilled or fried to match your mood.
Is grilled flounder a healthy choice?
Grilled flounder is one of the lighter seafood dinners you can order. NOAA Fisheries lists summer flounder at 91 calories and about 19 grams of protein per 100 grams raw (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026). The FDA also puts flounder on its “Best Choices” list of fish lower in mercury. Grilling adds very little fat compared with frying. To keep the plate light, pair it with a Side Salad instead of fries. Hush Puppies taste better, of course, and nobody here will judge you. If you follow a specific diet, your doctor has the final word.
Is flounder on the menu every night?
Not always. Flounder shows up only when it’s on the fresh catch board, and the fresh catch changes with what the boats bring in. Some nights it may be flounder, and other nights it may be something else entirely. That’s the trade for fish that’s wild-caught and never frozen. NOAA notes summer flounder is sold both fresh and frozen (Source: NOAA Fisheries 2026), so freshness is worth asking about. The easy move is to call (904) 246-2000 and ask what came in. If flounder is out, ask for the mildest fish on the board, grilled.
Can I order fish tacos for pickup in Atlantic Beach?
Yes. You can order fish tacos online for pickup in Atlantic Beach and grab them on the way home. Fried fillings stay crispiest if you eat them soon after pickup. Don’t leave them in a hot car, either. The FDA says seafood shouldn’t sit out over 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (Source: FDA 2024). Remember the kitchen serves dinner only. It’s open Monday 5 to 9 PM, closed Tuesday, and open Wednesday to Sunday 5 to 9 PM. Rather eat in? There’s no need to book. Just walk in.
So, tacos or flounder? When it comes to fish tacos, Atlantic Beach has strong opinions on both sides of the table. Pick tacos for flavor and crunch, flounder for clean, simple fish, and fresh either way. Swing by for dinner and settle it yourself. Hungry for more?
